NCA is dedicated to improving the lives of its employees in the office and at home. That’s why we’re rolling out a health and wellness program for 2021 that will consist of strategic plans to help curb chronic illnesses, lower the chances of our employees becoming obese and get them more active. While static workplaces have curbed the risk of acute injuries, chronic injuries — such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, etc. — have become more common due to prolonged sitting, lack of physical activity and easy access to processed foods and fast food. At NCA, we are working to counter those risks by providing our employees with fitness, diet and overall health programs to improve their quality of life for years to come.

Tips and tricks to stay fit over the holidays

The holiday season presents a great opportunity to spend time with family, friends and loved ones, but it also provides a lot of food. Some people worry about the amount they eat from October-December and the weight gain they believe it will lead to. Here are some tips to get through the holidays without packing on pounds:

  • WALK: On days that you’ll be eating big, move big, too! Go for a walk with a few family members after meals to get your digestive system moving more smoothly and to ensure some extra movement throughout the day.
  • Opt for lighter meats: If you’ll be carving up the turkey, chicken or ham this winter, look to get lighter pieces of meat on your plate. Chicken breast and turkey breast are two of the best high-protein, low-fat options.
  • Go moderate on the sweets: High amounts of sugar can cause your body to think it’s hungrier than it actually is, so before you go back for that second serving of apple pie, think about if you’re hungry or just craving sugar.
  • Drink lots of water: Throughout the day, remind yourself to drink water. When you’re dehydrated, your body sends a signal similar to being hungry. To combat this, drink lots of water to make sure that you’re not only hydrated, but also not misreading any signals from your body. Skip out on the soda and sugary drinks to avoid unnecessary calories and save more room for sweet potatoes!
  • Don’t be too hard on yourself: Remember, it’s the holiday season. Don’t skip out on lasting memories with loved ones because you’re afraid of overeating. One bad day likely won’t change anything on the scale. It’s the best bet for your mental health to avoid weighing yourself the morning after a big holiday meal, as it isn’t always accurate due to water weight or other factors.
